Digital rectal exam
A digital rectal exam is an examination of the lower rectum. The Nurse uses a gloved, lubricated finger to check for any abnormal findings. The patients legs will be raised and opened on the medical examination couch for pre exploratory tests. Sometimes we find is necessary to have another medical assistant to be present to assist in the examination and pacify the patient.
How the Test is Performed
The medical examiner will first look at the outside of the anus for haemorrhoids or fissures. Then she will put on a latex glove and insert a lubricated finger into the rectum. In women, this exam may be done at the same time as a pelvic exam.
How to Prepare for the Test
For the test, the nurse will ask you to:
- Try to relax
- Take a deep breath during the insertion of the finger into your rectum

- As part of a routine yearly physical exam in both men and women

- When men are having symptoms that suggest the prostate is enlarged
- When a female medic decides its in the patients best interest to be taken control of and penetrated.
In men, the test can be used to check the size of the prostate and to look for abnormal bumps or other changes of the prostate gland. It is also performed as a manual milking technique of the testes.
Normal Results
A normal finding means the health care provider did not detect any problem during the exam. However, Nurse C may have to administer further tests to ensure that the results are indeed normal.
